In yesterdays thought we touched on the metaphors of life and also on the temporary nature of life here on this planet. We are transients, moving through this space and time with our home in eternity.
“Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.”Psalm 39:4-5 NLT
I have a desire to make best use of my time on earth. I’ve always wanted to a positive impact in society. I know you do too because you’ve been proactive in joining this purpose driven community. Rick Warren writes in his book that to see this as a reality we must never forget two truths “First, compared with eternity, life is extremely brief. Second, earth is only a temporary residence.”
See as God sees.
Coming to a place where we have settled within ourselves that there is more to life than here and now and that heaven is our homeland we can stop worrying about “having it all” on earth. If you think about it, what does “having it all” even mean? I know for me, the “all” of my life are the people in my life and the impact I make with people around me.
“Only as we remember that life is a test, a trust, and a temporary assignment will the appeal of these things (success as defined by society) lose their grip on our lives.”Rick Warren
There will be trouble in this life. There is currently significant trouble in life for countless people across the globe. This is temporary. We have eternity before us and although we will experience moments of happiness here, nothing compares to the happiness to be experienced in the life to come.
Don’t get too attached.
Think for a moment of everything that is currently in your life. What is of eternal value? What will come with you? Nothing except for people. People are the true treasure and our temporary assignment is to love people deeply.
Remember: Heaven is our home.
Key Bible verse: “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Cor 4:18 NIV
Pray: Lord, help me to see as you see.
