You are here to make a contribution.

Welcome to the beginning of a new week and the introduction to a new major purpose for our lives.

Let’s recap.

Over the past few weeks we have discovered purpose by beginning with God. It all starts and ends in him. Our first major purpose is we are planned for God’s pleasure. The second major purpose is we are formed for God’s family and then thirdly, we were created to become like Christ.

Today we look at the fourth major purpose which is we are shaped for serving God.

Go designed you to make a difference with your life.

We aren’t here to be consumers. What’s the point of just taking up space.

“While many best selling books offer advice on how to “get” the most out of life, that’s not the reason God made you. You were created to add to life on earth, not just take from it.”

Rick Warren

God wants you to give something back.

You were created to serve God.

Whenever we are serving others in any way, we are actually serving God. By this we are fulfilling our purpose. We were placed on this planet for a special assignment.

You were saved to serve God.

We were redeemed by God for “Holy work”. We are not saved by serve but we are saved for service. Remembering the finished work of Jesus, that he gave his life for you and I, spurs us on to serve from of a place of joy and gratitude. Let’s not serve out of guilt and obligation. God tells us that every member of his family is a minister. The special assignment that God has ordained is not just for the pastor or priest, it’s for all of us. God has a ministry for you in the church and a mission for you in the world.

You are called to serve God.

You may have associated the “call” of God to be only for those in “full time” service of God. The nuns, priests and missionaries. But the Bible clearly tells us that we are all called. Our call to salvation was also our call to serve. Regardless of our job or career, we are all “full time” ministers. A “non-serving” Christian is a contradiction in terms. Any time you are using your God given abilities to help others, you are fulfilling your calling.

You are commanded to serve God.

“For Christians, service is not optional, something to be tacked onto our schedules if we can spare the time. It is the heart of the Christian life.” says Rick Warren. Serving and giving sums up this fourth major purpose. This life of following Jesus is not just about how much we know. That “knowing” is for a reason and that is to serve. The last thing so many christians need is to go to another church conference, what we really need is more opportunity to serve.

Service is the pathway to real significance. If you’re not involved in any “ministry” or service, what excuse have you been using?

Summary:

Remember – Service is not optional.

Key Bible Verse – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 NIV

Pray – Lord, today I make a commitment to serve you by serving others.
