Worship Through Service: Lessons from Brother Lawrence

You may not have heard of Nicolas Herman, born around 1614 in France. He wasn’t famous in his time — no portraits, no accolades. Yet his life continues to inspire Christians centuries later.

Why? Because he discovered that worship isn’t about stages or titles — it’s found in humble service.

A Soldier Who Found God in the Ordinary

Injured in battle, Nicolas had a profound moment of conversion while recovering. He saw a barren winter tree and realized:

“Just as the tree will blossom again in spring, God’s grace renews all things.”

He longed for a life wholly devoted to God. In his mid-20s or 30s, he joined a Carmelite monastery in Paris, taking the name Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection — a name symbolizing a new spiritual life.

He likely chose “Lawrence” after St. Lawrence of Rome, a deacon who said:

“These are the treasures of the Church,” pointing to the city’s poor rather than gold or silver.

Small Acts, Big Love

Brother Lawrence’s life wasn’t glamorous. He spent much of it washing dishes in the monastery kitchen.

Yet he shared this radical truth:

“We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.”

“We cannot all do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” — Mother Teresa

In a world obsessed with religious performance, Brother Lawrence taught that God is found in the ordinary — in service, in work, in daily life.

Serving Others = Worshiping God

Jesus put it simply:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” — Matthew 20:25-28

In Hebrew, the word עֲבוֹדָה (avad) means work, service, and worship. Scripture consistently links serving others to worshipping God:

  • Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
  • Matthew 4:10: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
  • Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart… it is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Bottom line: Serving others isn’t just good — it is worship.

Everyday Worship in Action

We don’t all get to do “great” things. But we can:

  • Encourage a neighbor.
  • Help a coworker.
  • Wash dishes with a cheerful heart.

Galatians 5 reminds us:

“Serve one another humbly in love.”

Every act of service, no matter how small, is an offering of worship to God.

Takeaway: God in the Ordinary

True greatness isn’t about recognition or position. It’s found in humble service.

God is present not only in cathedrals or stages — He’s in your kitchen, your workplace, your community. Serve others, love deeply, and worship continually.

Every ordinary act done with love is extraordinary worship.
