Every temptation is an opportunity to do good.

Temptation is just as much an opportunity to do the right thing as it is to do the wrong thing. We can see these moments as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. “Temptation simply provides the choice” says Rick Warren.

“My temptations have been my masters in divinity.”

Martin Luther

Character development always involves a choice. Being tempted is that opportunity. Rick Warren from The Purpose Driven Life says, “The most important spiritual truth that we will learn is: God develops the fruit of the Spirit in your life by allowing you to experience circumstances in which you’re tempted to express the exact opposite quality.

God teaches us love through placing “unloveable” people around us. There’s no growth in love if all we’re surrounded with is easy to love people. He teaches us joy in the midst of sorrow. God uses the opposite situation of each “fruit” to allow choice.

Every time we defeat temptation we become more like Jesus.

There are specific steps to take from The Purpose Driven Life to overcome temptation:

  • Refuse to be intimidated. Don’t be ashamed by being tempted. We don’t outgrow temptation. “In one sense you can consider temptation a compliment” says Warren. It is a normal part of us living in an imperfect world. We don’t choose temptation, but we do choose to act or not.
  • Recognise a pattern of temptation and be prepared. Certain situations will make us more vulnerable to temptation than others. Learn to identify those situations and then make adjustments. Wise planning can help avoid being tempted.
  • Call for God’s help. He wants you to reach out to him and will reach back to you. It doesn’t need to be a complicated and drawn our prayer, just simply “Help!” Know that God’s love is everlasting and his patience endures forever, he won’t be getting annoyed with you. Even if you are calling for help every second of the day. Rather that then think you can go it alone.

Temptation keeps us on our toes and reliant on God. We will stumble and make mistakes but keep turning to God in all things. Expect him to help you because he will.
