What we see is not all there is.
“Surely God would not have created such a being to exist only for a day! No, no, man was made for immortality.”
Abraham Lincoln
I’m not sure whether you’ve thought about what happens when life expires … where to next? I believe that we’ll spend far more time on the other side of this life because eternity awaits us all.
We were made to last forever.
What is the defining factor in eternity? Again, I believe it’s our relationship with God here and now which will determine our relationship with him in eternity. Based on our belief in Jesus as saviour, we either live connected with God or disconnected.
Eternity is a massive concept. Its hard to wrap your head around it. Living mindful of eternity will impact the way we live now. It brings perspective. Perspective is a powerful thing. Perspective is not just about what we see, it’s about how we see it. We all see the same thing but it’s amazing how differently we see it.
I remember the first time I went to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town. I was young and remember being at the foot of the mountain and being overwhelmed with how big it was. I’m not the biggest fan of heights and so I literally sat on the floor of the cable car the entire way up but I can still feel what I felt as I walked out and had the most amazing view of the City of Cape Town and the Atlantic seaboard on the other side. We had risen to a new height, a new vantage point, a new perspective. Now from a new perspective life took on a different meaning.
Purpose causes us to step back and step above the specifics of everyday life and see from a different perspective.
Living in light of eternity should effect our values and what we consider to be of true worth. There should be a higher premium on people and relationships rather than material accumulation and fame.
If this were all there is, then sure, live in such a way that takes no consideration for anyone or anything else. Reckless abandon. However, if we believe there is more, consider how this life plays a role in what’s to come.
God has a purpose for you here on earth but it doesn’t end here.
It’s foolish not to consider what comes next. We can’t deny what’s inevitable. We need to think more about eternity and not less.
In Summary:
Remember: Eternity awaits us all.
Key Bible verse: 1 John 2:17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
Pray: Father, in light of eternity, where should I be adjusting my focus?
